Transition Time [Again]

And when they spy
on us
let them discover
us
loving.
Alice Walker, Taking the Arrow Out of the Heart (2018)

February sent us south to Southern California for more book readings, a baby shower for our sister-in-law Casey and our annual staffing of the Bartimaeus Kinsler Institute 100 miles north of Los Angeles (see this for some of Tom's reflections). But before all this, Casey and Greg (Lindsay's brother) treated us to our first excursion on cross country skis. When the Cascades call, we come.

We are in the midst of another major geographic transition. The discernment has been more than a year in the making. In the middle of March, we will be packing up and leaving Michigan. Our destination is Central Oregon. Our vocation will mirror much of what has preceded over the past five years. The work of Kardia Kaiomene will continue to focus on soul accompaniment. This is fleshed out in Skype and phone calls, text and Marco Polo messaging, writing for blog sites and magazines, some more book readings and conversations, deep conversations one-on-one and in small groups, community organizing to amplify both justice and intimacy. For the next year (at least), this will involve less travel.

We covet your prayers as we say goodbye to Detroit and hit the road. We've done this before (September 2016), but we know this is different. We have a greater confidence that our partnership with Detroiters will be for life. We are grateful for this extended time of relationship-building. Our bond has been woven deep. We are already in dialogue about how we can stay connected in solidarity from 2000 miles away. We are also thrilled to be joining a team of young leaders traveling to Detroit over Labor Day weekend this year. We will serve as tour guides and introduce these friends to wounded healers who have transformed our lives. Perhaps this will be something we do on a consistent basis?

Before we head West, we've got engagements to attend and outstanding warrants to take care of (for our nonviolent direct actions with the Poor People's Campaign). One of our mentors Lila Cabill (left) joined the Ancestors last week. We will celebrate her life with fellow members of the People's Water Board Coalition this weekend. Lila was the president of the Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute in Detroit. She led anti-racism workshops and practically had perfect attendance at marches, rallies and organizing meetings. She was always so warm and welcoming to us, white outsiders that we were from day one!

All of this transition, illuminated by the powerful conversations and keynotes about Indigenous justice last week at the Institute, has us in the spiritual practice of naming whose land we are dwelling and commuting on. Here is how we are learning to describe "where we are from:"

Lindsay and Tommy Airey were born and raised on stolen, unceded Acjachemen territory (“Orange County”),
were transformed by the thin place the Ojibwe, Huron and Odawa call Wawiiatanong (“Detroit River”) and
are transitioning to the sacred flow the Molalla and Paiute
named Towarnehiooks (“Deschutes River”).

Where are you from?

RadicalDiscipleship.Net: two media outlets we get to write for, the latter which Tommy curates & co-edit with Lydia Wylie-Kellermann (pictured above, right). For the past 4 1/2 years, they have posted daily to the site. If you haven't already, check it out, or subscribe and have it daily sent to your email.
